Science Laboratory Assistant and Chemical Safety Officer

Newly created role of Science Lab Assistant/Chemical Safety Officer

We are seeking a professional, friendly and collaborative person who has the necessary qualifications, experience and knowledge to be able to fulfil the requirements of this role. You will be responsible for supporting the Science Faculty in ensuring resources are appropriately managed and support excellent student learning experiences in the classroom. Key responsibilities include:

  • support teachers and the delivery of Science lessons and experiments by preparing materials, setting up equipment and packing down
  • ensure all lab equipment is in clean and good working condition, perform regular checks, and arranging maintenance when required
  • maintain stock, including the storage and handling of hazardous substances according to safety guidelines, and inventory of chemicals and supplies
  • provide general laboratory administration such as correspondence and ordering of supplies
  • support the Chemical Safety and WHS requirements of the school
  • requirement to work some school holidays by negotiation

About You

You will be a committed Christian and member of a church, with a current Working with Children Check and can demonstrate the following:

Qualifications and Experience

  • experience and recognised qualification in Chemical Safety/WHS (minimum Certificate III in Laboratory Skills) or equivalent training

Preferred but not essential:

  • Diploma of Applied Science or equivalent
  • experience in an educational setting
  • current First Aid, including CPR, or willingness to obtain

Other

You will have:

  • a love of Science and be willing to work with young people
  • capacity to contribute to a friendly and collegial team environment
  • a strong understanding of Risk Assessments and Management, relevant WHS legislation, Hazard Management, Chemical Safety and registers (school-wide). Chemwatch and SDS management experience preferred
  • excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • excellent organisational skills in the self-management of time, as well as willingness to follow direction and prioritisation
  • the ability to remain flexible under pressure whilst maintaining productivity and focus on key tasks
  • capacity to collate practical equipment in a timely manner, stocktake, order and manage resources and maintain all equipment
  • excellent ICT skills, including research skills, across a range of platforms
  • a current NSW Driver’s Licence
  • willingness to undertake professional learning and maintain an up-to-date skillset
  • ideally an ability to fulfil a 7:55am to 3:55pm workday and some school holidays - flexible options will be considered for the successful candidate.
