COVID-19 Family Wellbeing

During uncertain times, it is not unusual to have feelings of worry and unease. However, as parents and caregivers, it is important that we learn to manage stress and worry before it turns to more severe anxiety and panic, which can affect the children in our care.

In your role as parent/caregiver, there are a number of things you can consider, to look after the emotional wellbeing of you and your family – starting with taking care of yourself!

As we know, children and adolescents, just like adults, absorb information from what they hear and see around them: from the news, social media, discussions at home, at school, at the shops and with their peers.

In your role as parent/caregiver, there are a number of things you can consider, to look after the emotional wellbeing of you and your family.

  • Take care of yourself. Children/adolescents will be looking to you and how you are managing.

  • Ensure you have reliable information and follow advice given.

  • Monitor media coverage and set limits; both for yourself and your child/adolescent.

  • Maintain ‘normal’ day-to-day activities, where possible, e.g. family meals, playing, getting outdoors.

  • Stay connected with friends and family, via video calls, etc.

  • Make time to talk and listen to your child; ask open questions, find out what your child already knows, and dispel any myths or untruths they may have.

  • Share information honestly, in an age-appropriate way. Give small amounts, wait, and then ask if they have any questions. Both under-sharing and oversharing can cause undue anxiety.

  • Tune into their feelings; acknowledge/normalise their fears, and reassure them truthfully, and talk about the things you as a family can/are doing to manage the situation.

I have included a number of links to reputable websites/information below that may help you in supporting you and your families.

Yours faithfully
